| Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of long thin fibres. The word "asbestos" is derived from the Greek adjective meaning inextinguishable. This material was termed the "miracle mineral" because of its soft and pliable properties, as well as its ability to withstand heat, acids and alkalis. |

| The three types mainly used within the construction and refurbishment of buildings are: |
| |
|
Chrysotile (White Asbestos) Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4
Chrysotile is a member of the group of minerals known as serpentine. White asbestos was the most commonly used form of asbestos within the UK, used in asbestos cements, textured decorative coatings (sometimes referred to as Artex), Vinyls and various textile and paper products.

Amosite (Brown Asbestos) Fe7Si8O22(OH)2
Amosite is a member of the group of minerals known as amphibole. Brown asbestos was typically used in insulation materials such as pipe lagging or in pressed boards such as Millboard and Asbestos Insulation Board (AIB).

Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos)
Anthophylite, Tremolite & Actinolite These are again members of the amphibole group but are less common and are only found occasionally within the UK.

| It is important to note that all types of asbestos are hazardous and can cause various health issues, including asbestosis and mesothelioma. |

| Asbestos is still the cause of over 3500 deaths per year.
Na2Fe2+3Fe3+2Si8O22(OH)2 Crocidolite is another member of the amphibole group. Commonly used within insulation materials such as pipe lagging and sprayed insulations, Crocidolite is seen as one of the most deadly forms of Asbestos. |
